It would seem that a fair amount of specific response is lost when various items of a system are more automated. "Set It And Forget It" doesn't appear to be as successful anymore, since customers see other companies continually providing extra effort and services on top of their main service.

I bought the set-it-and-forget-it machine for a buddy of mine, and once you open the box there are stickers all over the thing saying, "PLEASE DO NOT JUST SET-IT-AND-FORGET-IT."

So, case in point, I guess.

[...] Your content is not rotisserie chicken (Editor on the verge) "Too many online staffs treat their websites like the Showtime Rotisserie Oven. They, say it with me, “Set it and Forget it.” Enamored with automation, they design sites that is chock full of headline pulls, RSS feeds and automated dayparting, Flash galleries, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a technophobe, but the problem I have is that all the automation becomes an excuse to not deal with their site unless there is a problem or special project." (tags: automation content+strategy news+biz problems tidbits+fodder) [...]
